General Information for Prospective Troops

As you look over the requirements to earn your badge, there are some that you can explore and find the answers to as well as those that require professional knowledge. At Jordan Stables, we aim to assist you with those answers.

Your unmounted time with us will take about an hour. During that time, you will:

• Have an orientation and tour of the stable as we discuss with you the care of horses.  Explain what they eat, how much and how often.  What kind of treats they may have.  What is included in everyday care for a stable and what is necessary for their well being.  Why horses need to be shod and how it’s done.

• Examine the tools needed to groom a horse and discover the purpose of each.  Learn how to brush a horse before and after saddling. 

• Practice safe stall and barn behavior.

• Discuss safe riding rules, good ring manners, safe clothing and gear for riding.

• Watch the saddling and bridling of a horse.   Explain safety concerns during the process.

You will then go on a 5 minute pony ride. After receiving a very basic demonstration of mounting, correct positioning, explanation of stopping and turning, we will assist you to mount, adjust stirrups, and then proceed on a short pony ride.
